The Trappist (Oakland, CA)

Is it weird that I’m starting this San Diego blog while I’m in the Bay Area? I am incredibly homesick for San Diego, and places like this make me miss San Diego more, not because it sucks, but because it’s so good and reminds me of home.

The Trappist is a craft beer bar that specializes in Belgians, serving 28 rotating taps and over 100 specialty bottles. Not only do they serve Belgians, they serve Belgian-style beer by American craft breweries (Green Flash Le Freak!), and I also saw a non-Belgian style IPA (Firestone Union Jack, mm).

The Trappist also serves food: nibblies like a bowl of olives, a cheese plate, and a charcuterie plate (called The Trappist Plate), and more substantial, single-person food like salads and sandwiches. I indulged in the Trappist Plate, which came with 4 different cured meats, plus some cornichons, other pickled veggies, and anchovies. My friends ordered pork and beans (with pork belly!), and a spicy sausage placed in French bread.

The Trappist Plate, with four different meats and some pickled vegetables. Taken on my pathetic iPhone camera.

All-in-all, a good experience. If you love Belgians and are in the Bay Area, definitely check this place out for their beer selection and quality food.
